Verizon Customers Support Literacy Program at Ardmore Free Library
Ardmore Library Receives $5,000 Grant for Literacy Programs
posted October 16, 2008
Nutrition Literacy addresses critical issues found at the crossroads of basic literacy and public health. Understanding information about nutrition and safe food preparation found in recipes, food labels, grocery stores, and restaurant menus can pose a tremendous challenge for both native and non-native speakers of English. Promoting good nutritional habits to early literacy/beginning readers is also an important focus of nutrition literacy.
The ‘Check Into Literacy’ initiative allows Verizon’s landline telephone customers to indicate on their monthly phone bills that they wish to make a $1 tax-deductible donation to promote literacy. Verizon then distributes these donations to local literacy organizations.
“A dollar a month may not seem like much, but it can go a long way toward improving literacy skills in local communities and giving people the opportunity to succeed,” said Daniel J. Reavy, Director of External Affairs, Verizon Pennsylvania. “We are delighted that the Ardmore Free Library’s diverse literacy programs will benefit through the generosity of our customers.”
Christine Steckel, Director of the Lower Merion Library System, stated, “We are delighted to have the support of Verizon for the literacy programs offered at the Ardmore Free Library.” She said that the library intends to use Verizon Check Into Literacy funding to build a collection of library materials promoting nutrition literacy, and to fund two one-time nutrition literacy programs for families in the Ardmore Library community.
