 Basic Guidelines

To use the LMLS wireless network you must abide by the LMLS Internet Acceptable Use Policy.

You can connect to our network with your wireless device using 802.11b, g or n wireless cards.

If your web browser has "Pop-Up Blocker" turned ON, please add the IP address 192.168.1.40 to the "Allowed Site" list in your Pop-Up Blocker Settings. Interaction with the wireless system depends upon Pop-Up messages. Having the above IP address on your "Allowed Site" list allows you to view the pop-up messages generated from the wireless system.

LMLS does not provide wireless cards nor do we assist with configuring your device for wireless access.

LMLS filters wireless Internet access in compliance with federal CIPA requirements. Unfiltered wireless access is not currently available.*

You cannot have concurrent logins on the wireless network.

Wireless sessions last a maximum of 2 hours. You may have as many nonconcurring sessions as you want. Idle sessions will be logged out after 15 minutes, preceded by a site dependent warning for 10 minutes left (Ludington and Penn Wynne) or for 5 minutes left (Ardmore, Bala Cynwyd, Belmont Hills, Gladwyne).

Patrons whose Polaris accounts are blocked cannot use the wireless network. Check with staff if you experience trouble logging in.

Non library patrons who are visiting the area must be logged in by staff.

Wireless access is available during library hours only.

* Patrons 17 years of age or above who require unfiltered Internet access should use the library’s public PCs.

LMLS Wireless Configuration & Network Settings

Access to the LMLS Stop and Go wireless network no longer requires WEP Security.  This means that your default wireless connection settings should allow you to connect to "Stop and Go".  The first time you visit you will need to "View Available Wireless Networks" and then Connect to "Stop and Go".

Configure your wireless network connection so that Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is set to "DHCP enabled" or "Obtain an IP address automatically." This is a default configuration and may already be done for you.

DNS settings should be "Obtain a DNS address automatically". This is also a default configuration and may already be done for you.

In your web browser it is essential that you set the Local Area Network [LAN] settings to "Automatically detect settings." For details see number 3 of Frequently Asked Questions.

In your pop-up blocker settings please add the IP address 192.168.1.40 to the "Allowed Site" list. For details see number 5 of Frequently Asked Questions.

It may be necessary to disable your personal firewall.

 Frequently Asked Questions

1)  Question:  When I try to log in with my barcode and pin I get a login error screen.

Answer:  The login/password is not right. Try re-entering the barcode and/or pin, checking that barcode numbers are not missed and Caps Lock is turned off.  Have a staff member check or reset the pin/password in the Online Library System making sure that CAPS lock is not turned on.  You also could have a block on your patron account, or excessive fines, or your barcode needs to be re-validated.  Have your patron account checked by a staff member.

2)  Question:  Why can't I see the wireless network at all, my computer does not detect it?

Answer:  Make sure the wireless adapter is enabled.  Go to Programs-Settings-Control Panel and open Network Connections Looking for the "Wireless Network Connection".  Some laptops have a hardware on/off switch for the wireless adapter on the laptop.  Example, Toshiba Laptops have a wireless switch along the edge (front or sides) of the keyboard portion of the laptop.  There will be an LED indicator with a wireless symbol near the switch.  Check to see if a switch exists and that the card is not switched off.  The symbol on the hardware for the wireless card may look like an antenna with waves coming out of the left and right side, such as (((¡))).

3)  Question:  I logged in with my barcode and password and it said login successful but I still can't get anywhere on the internet.

Answer:  The browser is not set to "automatically detect proxy" or does not support the Auto-detect option (See Mac OS info below) to get to the internet.  Depending on your browser do one of the following:

Internet Explorer - Go to the menu bar and click on "Tools".  If using IE 7 and you do not see the file, edit, tools, etc. menus along the top then make sure your menu bar is active.  Select "Internet Options" and then the "Connections" tab.  Click on the "LAN settings" button toward the bottom.  Only check the box for "Automatically detect settings".  Click OK to save LAN Settings.  Click OK to close Internet Options save your settings.  You do not need to restart the browser or computer.

Firefox - Go to the "Tools" menu. Choose "Options".
For version 1.x - Go to the "General" tab.  Click on the "Connection Settings" button.  Select the radio button next to "Auto-detect proxy settings for this network".  Click OK to close Connection Settings.  Click OK to close Options and save your settings.
For version 2.x - Click on "Advanced" Go to the "Network" tab.  Click on the "Settings" button.  After that it is the same as above.
For version 2.x and 3.x on MAC OS X 10.5.x - To access the Firefox "Advanced" Settings Click on the "Firefox" Menu and select "Preferences" and then follow the instructions above for Firefox v2.x.

Manual Proxy Server Setting - If you still have trouble, especially with browsers other than IE, it may help to manually set the proxy server, rather than have it do the automatic detection of settings.  In the browser "Tools" menu, or something similar, set the proxy server address to "filter.lmls.org" and set the port to 8080.

NOTE:  When you are finished using the LMLS wireless network make sure you remove the manual proxy server setting.  Either change the setting to "Auto-detect" (if available) or "direct connect to Internet".  You must de-select the option for using a specific proxy server or you will not be able to browse on the Internet in another network.

4)  Question:  I am a Mac user and after following instructions above I still cannot access the Internet.

Answer:  The Mac OS has problems with our current wireless configuration. Mac OS 10.X does not support automatic detection, which means you have to set the proxy setting manually (See question 3 above). Please note that "automatic configuration" requires a PAC file setting and is different from "automatic detection" of proxies.  Also, the Internet connection settings may not all be in the browser tools menu.  Look in the Mac OS Control Panel for Network Settings and click on "proxies".

5)  Question:  How do I add an IP Address to the "Allowed Sites" list in my pop-up blocker?

Answer:  If using Internet Explorer go to the Tools menu and highlight Pop-up Blocker.  If it says "Turn on Pop-up blocker" there is nothing to do.  If it says "Turn off Pop-up blocker" select Pop-up Blocker Settings. type in the "address for the site to be allowed", which in this case is 192.168.1.40, click Add then click close.   If you are using Google Toolbar there will be a button that has a small picture of browser windows circled with a line through it and it says N Blocked, where N is the number of pop-ups blocked by the Google Toolbar.  While you are at the Acceptance Use Policy/Login page click on this button and it will change to Pop-ups OK.

Firefox on Windows - Go to the "Tools" menu. Choose "Options". Click on "Content". Click on the "Exceptions" button (located to the right of the "Block Pop-up Windows Option"). Enter the address "192.168.1.40" (without quotes) and click "Allow", Click OK.

Firefox on MAC OS X 10.5.x - To access the Firefox Settings, first Click on the "Firefox" Menu and select "Preferences". Then Click on "Content". Click on the "Exceptions" button (located to the right of the "Block Pop-up Windows Option"). Enter the address "192.168.1.40" (without quotes) and click "Allow", Click OK.

6)  Question:  I have a poor signal and cannot connect, but I usually have no problem.

Answer:  If you are usually connected to the Stop and Go network in a different part of the building it could be that your wireless connection is not transitioning to the closest wireless access point.  Right click on the wireless icon in the system tray of your computer (Bottom right hand corner).  Select Repair from the list of menu options.  You will see the connection reinitialize and the connection should now associate itself with the nearest access point.
