JULY 11, 2016 – From the Library Director, David Belanger

Hello and welcome to the redesigned website for the Lower Merion Library System.  This is just one of the many exciting projects underway this summer in Lower Merion libraries.

I would like to introduce myself as the new Director of Libraries for Lower Merion Township.  My responsibilities are to manage the operation of all six libraries in the township: Ardmore, Bala Cynwyd, Belmont Hills, Gladwyne, Ludington and Penn Wynne.  I started back in April and after three months I’m getting settled, but still learning the details of how Lower Merion Township provides the best library service in the region.  We are fortunate to have great support from the township and a highly skilled staff ready to provide superior customer service.  Prior to working for the Lower Merion Library System I was director of the Delaware County Library System for 22 years and the DCLS technology coordinator for 8 years prior to that.  I am proud to be an appointee to the Governor’s Advisory Council on Library Development which works with the PA State Library to help develop policies to improve libraries in the Commonwealth.

In addition to the new website, libraries are abuzz with summer reading programs.  There are programs for children, teens and adults.  Learn more about the activities at https://www.lmls.org/events/ There’s also a lot of progress with the renovation at the Gladwyne Library.  The elevator shaft is taking shape and when completed, a glass enclosure will allow you to see the inter-workings of the elevator as it makes the library fully accessible.  Speaking of renovations, staff are working on the design plans for the sixth library renovation in the township, Belmont Hills.

On the horizon is a complete replacement of all the public Internet computers available in libraries.  Staff are working on configuring 62 computers which will feature Office 2016 and Windows 10. Another feature being investigated is Wifi printing. Look for more news on that in the fall.

Later in the fall is the One Book One Lower Merion project.  This program encourages all residents to read the same book and then attend various related programs to discuss the book and explore its impact on the community.  This year’s book is The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead, a magnificent tour de force chronicling a young slave’s adventures as she makes a desperate bid for freedom in the antebellum South.  The author’s ingenious conception is that the railroad is not just a metaphor but a place where engineers and conductors operate a secret network of tracks and tunnels beneath Southern soil.   Beautifully written, with a plot that is intense and memorable; this is a book that you won’t be able to put down.  Mark your calendars for Sunday, December 4 at 2 p.m. to hear the author speak about his books.

Stop by the web site regularly to see all the new activities going on in Lower Merion Libraries.  Happy reading!
