LMLS 1000 Books Reading Challenge

We’ve all heard it’s important to read to your child but really, how important is it? A study from Ohio State’s Crane Center for Early Childhood Research and Policy found that “young children whose parents read them five books a day enter kindergarten having heard about 1.4 million more words than kids who were never read to…even kids who are read only one book a day will hear about 290,000 more words by age 5 than those who don’t regularly read books with a parent or caregiver” (Grabmeier 2019). How Does it Work? Come to your local Lower Merion Library and to be registered on Beanstack© and receive a Beanstack Badge Book (while supplies last) and informational materials! Track your progress in the Badge Book with the colorful milestone stickers. Then enter the number of books you read in Beanstack© (lmls.beanstack.org) to get virtual badges and reward messages. It’s that easy! Attending storytime counts towards your book count too. And yes, if you read the same book every night it counts! Milestone Prizes: For every 100 books read, come to the library to receive a Brag Tag®! At 250, 500, and 750 books you will receive a free book! When you complete all 1000 books you will receive another free book plus a graduation certificate!

LMLS Storywalk

Did you know that Lower Merion Libraries have a story walk at Asbridge Park? The StoryWalk® concept was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT, and was developed with the help of Rachel Senechal from the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. Started in 2019 by the Ardmore Rotary Club and Lower Merion Library Foundation, with assistance from Parks and Recreation, 16 panels have been installed to share a story that is continuously changing throughout the year.

The StoryWalk® is an innovative and delightful way for children (and adults) to enjoy reading and the outdoors simultaneously. Individual laminated pages from a children’s picture book are installed along an outdoor path. Children and their caregivers walk the path and read a book together, encouraging both literacy and exercise.

The GPS Address for Ashbridge Park is 1301 Montgomery Ave, Bryn Mawr, PA 19010
